In Greek mythology, the pomegranate is most famously associated with Persephone, the goddess of spring and the queen of the underworld. The pomegranate symbolizes her cyclical journey between the world of the living and the underworld. Persephone's abduction by Hades and her subsequent consumption of pomegranate seeds in the underworld are key elements of the myth explaining the origins of the seasons.
